It is the three Favourites (1st, 2nd and 3rd) combined in one H2H outcome and the second H2H is the 4th, 5th and 6th Favourites combined, excluding the Fav if it is Odds-on (under $2). This is a moving dynamic market so as the odds change for the actual race the odds will change for the H2H outcome. Before the best week of Racing in Australia we kick off with the Group 3 Bendigo Cup on Wednesday. On Saturday it is a huge day with every race a Group Race, highlighted by the Group 1 VRC Derby. Also on Saturday there is the Mortlake Cup and on Sunday is the Peninsula Cup (at Mornington) and the Goulburn Cup.

The Victoria Derby was first run in 1855 when Rose of May scored an impressive victory, amazingly that was six years before the Melbourne Cup was first run and won by Archer. It has basically always been 2,500 metres (one year in 1972 it was 2,400 metres) and has been Group 1 since 1979. Over the journey of the great race there has been a few change of race dates so this enabled Fireworks to win the VRC Derby twice, once in November 1867 and New Years Day in 1868. If anyone is unsure the “Flower of the day” is the blue cornflower. The Best winner of the Victoria Derby and Australia’s greatest ever horse was Phar Lap in 1929……Bobby Lewis has the most wins by a jockey with eight between 1900 to 1927. James Scobie has the most wins by a Trainer with eight between 1900 and 1937……

Mahogany who won the VRC Derby in 1993 at 3/1 ($4) won eight Group 1 Races and was owned by Kerry Packer and Lloyd Williams, he was trained by Lee Freedman.
