A young Sydney woman was so depressed with all this Covid-19 drama that she decided to end her life by throwing herself into the Sydney Harbour. Just before she could throw herself off Circular Quay, a handsome young man stopped her. “Stop-Stop, You have so much to live for,” said the man. “I’m a sailor, and we are off to Italy tomorrow. I can stow you away on my ship. I’ll take care of you, bring you food every day, and keep you happy.” With nothing to lose, combined with the fact that she had always wanted to go to Italy , the woman accepted. That night the sailor brought her aboard and hid her in a small but comfortable compartment in the hold without any windows. From then on, every night he would bring her three sandwiches, a bottle of red wine, and make love to her until dawn. Two weeks later she was discovered by the Captain during a routine inspection. “What are you doing here?” asked the Captain. “I have an arrangement with one of the sailors,” she replied. “He brings me food and I get a free trip to Italy .” “I see,” the Captain says. Her conscience got the best of her and she added, “Plus, we enjoy each other’s company every night.” “He certainly is,” replied the Captain….Sorry to break this news to you and you can discuss with your new young sailor friend but – “This is the Manly Ferry ..”

People often ask me the biggest bet I have taken in the journey since 1992. For dollar mount it was on Black Caviar in the Group 2 Australia Stakes in Jan 2012. She was $1.03 (33/1 on) to $1.02 (50/1 on) on this day and won by 4 lengths in a field of 7. A Client from Singapore had $500k at $1.03 to win $15k, needless to say I was hoping she put her foot in a hole but didn’t hurt herself or Luke Nolen. Not to be though……

The Winx Stakes – formerly the Warwick Stakes – is one of the country’s newest Group 1 races upgraded from its previous Group 2 status for the first time in 2018 and renamed in honour of the world’s best mare – Winx. The Royal Randwick race is held at the very start of the esteemed Sydney Spring Racing Carnival giving Sydney bragging rights to the opening Group 1 race of the Spring since the upgrade. The feature event of Winx Stakes Day, the race is run over 1,400m under weight-for-age (WFA) conditions and the prize money was doubled from $250,000 to $500,000 for the first time in 2018. Runners in the Winx Stakes may have previously competed in the Group 3 Missile Stakes (1,100m), another weight-for-age event at Randwick two weeks prior. The race’s now namesake Winx won the race first-up in 2016, again in 2017 and then became a three-time champion of the event in 2018 shortly before she retired from racing. As much as it is great to honour Winx with a race in her honour I am a Traditionalist and prefer the original name. This race has been known as the Warwick Stakes since 1923 and some famous winners include Amounis (1930), Bernborough (1946), Tulloch (1957), Kingston Town (1980, 81 and 82), Super Impose (1990 and 91), Shaftesbury Avenue (1992), Sunline (1999), Lonhro (2001 and 2003) and Winx (2016, 17 and 2018).
