VJOKE

A man goes into a bar with his dog. He goes up to the bar and asks for a drink. The bartender says “You can’t bring that dog in here!” The guy, without missing a beat, says “This is my seeing-eye dog.” “Oh man,” the bartender says, “I’m sorry, here, the first one’s on me.” The man takes his drink and goes to a table near the door. Another guy walks into the bar with a Chihuahua. The first guys sees him, stops him and says “You can’t bring that dog in here unless you tell him it’s a seeing-eye dog.” The second man graciously thanks the first man and continues to the bar. He asks for a drink. The bartender says “Hey, you can’t bring that dog in here!” The second man replies “This is my seeing-eye dog.” The bartender says, “No, I don’t think so. They do not have Chihuahuas as seeing-eye dogs.”
The man pauses for a half-second and replies “What??! They gave me a Chihuahua??!”

It is another cracking weekend of racing coming up with the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning as well as two Group 3 Races at Flemington. There are also two Group 2 Races and two Group 3 Races at Randwick. On Sunday it is the Colac Gold Cup.

Now known as the Black Caviar Lightning, the Lightning Stakes has been around since 1955. Its particulars have never really changed: it’s always been run over 1000 metres (or the old equivalent, five furlongs), and it’s always been run down the famous straight at Flemington (the only exception being 2007, when it was run at Moonee Valley due to track refurbishments at Flemington). In 2013, the new race name was adopted to honour the great Black Caviar, after she became the only horse to have won the race three times. That feat overtook a number of Australia’s great sprinters who had won the Lightning twice: Sky High (1961 and 1962), Wenona Girl (1963 and 1964), Maybe Mahal (1977 and 1978), River Rough (1984 and 1985), Schillaci (1992 and 1993) and Mahogany (1995 and 1997). The race is the first of the three big Group 1 sprint events over the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival. The Oakleigh Plate (1,100 metres) at Caulfield follows the Lightning, with the Newmarket Handicap (1,200 metres) back at Flemington after the Oakleigh Plate. Only two horses have completed the treble, winning all three in one year: Western Australian champion Placid Ark in 1987, and the big grey Schillaci in 1992. With Australian sprinting entering a golden age over the past fifteen years, the list of recent winners of the Lightning includes some impressive names: In Her Time (2019), Redkirk Warrior (2018), Terravista (2017), Chautauqua (2016), Lankan Rupee (2015), Snitzerland (2014), Black Caviar (2011-2012-2013), Nicconi (2010), Scenic Blast (2009), Apache Cat (2008), Miss Andretti (2007), Takeover Target (2006) and Fastnet Rock (2005)…..
