VJOKE

Three Melbourne contractors Timmsy, Randall & Ken (or KK as he is known) are bidding to fix a broken fence at the Royal Melbourne Gold Club. All three go with a Royal Melbourne Manager to examine the fence. Randall takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. “Well,” he says, “I figure the job will cost about $1,500, $800 for materials, $400 for my crew and $300 profit for me.” Then KK also does some measuring and figuring out. He then says, “I can do this job for $2,500, $1,200 for materials, $800 for my crew, and $500 profit for me.” Then Timmsy doesn’t measure anything, but leans over to the RMGC Manager and whispers, “$5,000.” The manager is incredulous, says, “You didn’t even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure compared to the other two?” Timmsy whispers back, “$1,750 for me, $1,750 for you and we hire Randall to fix the fence.” “Done Deal!” replies the Royal Melbourne Gold Club Manager. And that, my friends, is how the new Victorian stimulus plan will work……

The actual first race meeting was conducted in Warrnambool in 1847 on the seafront in front of the Lady Bay Hotel where the horses still prepare today. In 1855 the Government set aside 100 acres as a Racing and Recreation Reserve. Then three years later in 1858 the first race meeting took place and included a three mile steeplechase with the winner collecting 40 sovereigns. The Warrnambool May Carnival dates way back to 1872 with the first running of the Warrnambool Steeplechase, now known as the Grand Annual Steeplechase, it changed its name in 1895. There were 11 runners and the prize money was 100 pounds. The following year in 1873 the first running of the Warrnambool Cup took place. It started off at 3,200m (the Melbourne Cup distance) and has had nine distance changes to arrive at the current 2,350m. It is usually won by one of the local horses that has a proven track record. The Wangoom Handicap is run over 1,200m and was first run in 1888, it is the feature of the middle day of the Warrnambool Carnival. The race is named after the small town that is about 12 kms from Warrnambool (Population 378 at last count)…
