Cherie didn’t come home one night. When Geoff, who is the local football star and has Collingwood chasing him, asked her where she’d been, she said she spent the night at a girl friend’s house. Geoff was very suspicious and he thought maybe she’d been “sleeping around” so he rang her ten closest friends, but none of them had seen her. The following week Geoff didn’t come home one night, he had a big night out celebrating winning the League award, the equivalent to the Brownlow. Cherie then asks him the next morning where he’d been? So Geoff says he got a bit drunk at a mate’s place and thought it was safer not to drive but better to stay there. Cherie thinks he’s been “sleeping around” so while he is crashed out on the couch snoring away with a terrible hangover she rings his ten best mates. In true Aussie style – eight of them say he spent the night there and two of them Joey and Longy claim he’s still there….

But looking ahead to this upcoming weekend some of the highlights include the return of Moonee Valley Night Races with the Group 1 Moir Stakes, then on Saturday there is the Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield and the Group 1 Golden Rose at Rosehill. There are lots of Group 2 and 3 races as well, too many to mention and all the usual overseas races on every night….

The Underwood Stakes was first run in 1924 when it was won by Whittier who also won in the following year in 1925.  The race is named after a former chairman of the Victorian Amateur Turf Club (VATC) James Underwood. It was actually formerly known as the Williamstown Stakes. It hit Group One status in 1979 when it was run on the last Thursday in September on what was known as the Show Day Holiday. It is generally considered the unofficial opening of the Melbourne Spring Carnival. Between 1924-1947 it was run at the former Williamstown Racecourse but has always been held at Caulfield from 1948 onwards. Ironically this year is the first time ever it will be run at Sandown. The most famous winner was Phar Lap in 1931, other notable winners include Heroic, Ajax – three times in a row in 1938, 39 and 1940, Lord, Tobin Bronze, Rain Lover, Big Philou, Bonecrusher, Rubiton, Octagonal, Tie The Knot, Northerly, So You Think, Weekend Hussler, El Segundo and Elvstroem…….
