VJOKE

An Italian woman was leaving University Café in Lygon street in Melbourne with her espresso when she noticed a most unusual Italian funeral procession approaching the nearby cemetery in Carlton. A black hearse was followed by a second black hearse about 50 metres behind the first one. Behind the second hearse was a solitary Italian woman walking a dog on a leash. Behind her, a short distance back were about 400 women walking in single file. The woman with her coffee couldn’t stand the curiosity. She respectfully approached the Italian woman walking the dog and said: “I am so sorry for your loss and this may be a bad time to disturb you, but I’ve never seen an Italian funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?” “My husband’s.” “What happened to him?” “He yelled at me and my dog attacked and killed him.” She inquired further. “But who is in the second hearse?” The Italian woman answered. “My mother-in-law, she was trying to help my husband when the dog turned on her as well, killed her as well.” A very poignant and touching moment of Italian sisterhood and silence passed between the two women… “Can I borrow the dog?” The woman replied, “Get in line.”

Who was W.S. Cox? William Samuel Cox founded Moonee Valley Racing Club in 1883 on his land. The clear second best horse race in Australia the WS Cox Plate (after the Melbourne Cup and ahead of the Caulfield Cup) was named in his honour and was first run 1922. Since the first running of the WFA Classic Favourites have won 41% of the time and if the Fav is under $2 (Even Money) like Winx in 2016-2018 then they have won 70% of the time. The “Best of all Time” Phar Lap started at $1.14 (7/1 on) when he won in 1930 and then when he won again in 1931 he started the shortest ever at $1.07 (14/1 on).…….…Click on the link below to watch one of the best Cox Plates of all time, at least the best I have ever seen and an amazing field. I stood on the edge of the track after walking down the race actually on the grass opposite the finishing line.
