VJOKE
Merv and his wife Marj went to the Sydney Royal Easter Show every year, and each year Merv would say, “Marj, I’d like to go for a ride in that helicopter.” Marj always replied, “I know Merv, but that helicopter ride is fifty bucks, and fifty bucks is fifty bucks.” Last year when they went to the Easter Show and Merv said, “Marj, I’m 93 years old. If I don’t ride that helicopter this year I might never get another chance.” To this, Marj replied, “Merv that helicopter ride is fifty bucks, and fifty bucks is fifty bucks.” The pilot overheard the couple and said, “Folks, I’ll make you a deal. I’ll take the both of you up for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say a single word, I won’t charge you one cent! But if you say one word it’s fifty dollars.” Merv and Marj agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of fancy manoeuvres, but not a word was heard. He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, but still not a word. When they landed, the pilot turned to Merv and said, “By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn’t. I’m very impressed!” Merv replied, “Well, to tell you the truth, I almost said something when Marj fell out, but you know, fifty bucks is fifty bucks!”

VFACTS
Royal Randwick opened for racing in 1833 and the All Aged Stakes was first run in 1865. Maid of the Lake was the winner of the first All Aged Stakes in 1865. The second year of the race supplied the first racing controversy in the history of the race. The Pitsford was the winner first past the post, but was disqualified for some reason, leaving Falcon as the winner. Glencoe from 1869 was the first notable to win the All Aged Stakes after he won the 1868 Melbourne Cup. The next two years supply us with Tim Whiffler with All Aged Stakes wins in 1870 and 1871. Like Glencoe, Tim Whiffler won a Melbourne Cup. The winner in 1876 Briseis also won the Melbourne Cup in the same year, the Doncaster Handicap and the VRC Victoria Derby. Her sire was Tim Whiffler. In 1889 and 1890 the immortal Carbine posted back-to-back wins. Carbine won all the important races, including two Sydney Cups (1889 and 1890) and the 1890 Melbourne Cup. Carbine had a successful stud career that includes ties to over half of all the Melbourne Cup winners, from the years of 1914 through to 1978. Names such as Comic Court, Phar Lap, Rising Fast, Rain Lover and Think Big. Another Carbine descendant was three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva. Winx can trace her lines to Carbine also. Ajax holds the record for the most consecutive wins in the All Aged Stakes, winning the race three years in a row from 1938-1940. The multiple All Aged winners include Carbine (1889, 1890), Marvel (1891, 1894), Yaralla (1942, 1943), Kilshery (1962, 1963), Dalrello (1976, 1977), Rough Habit (1992, 1993) and Sunline (2000, 2002). Other notable winners are Briseis (1876), Wakeful (1902), Amounis (1930), Chatham (1934), Peter Pan (1935), Bernborough (1946), San Domenico (1952), Tulloch (1958), Lord (1959), Sky High (1961), Wenona Girl (1964), Tobin Bronze (1967), Tontonan (1974), Emancipation (1984), Campaign King (1987), Shaftesbury Avenue (1991), Private Steer (2004), Racing To Win (2008), Hay List (2011), Atlantic Jewel (2012), All Too Hard (2013), Pierata (2019) and Tofane (2020)…..The 1984 winner – Emancipation is my all-time Favourite horse, to watch some of her amazing wins – CLICK HERE.
VREFER
Many people think we are one of those Corporate outfits but that is not the case. With an emphasis on Horse Racing, Dogs and Trots we are the Old Fashioned type of Bookmakers (four generations going back to 1941). My Late Father Allen Cleary was a Bookmaker from 1956 – 2006, his Uncle Bob was a Bookmaker from 1941 – 1961. Today it is myself Rod and my Son Tim sharing the reins. We are NOT Corporates, we work On Course at the Melbourne Metro Meetings on the Rails, however the vast majority of our turnover is Online. Once again your referrals are always very much appreciated and one of the main sources of us sourcing new Clients so thanks very much in advance…….
