On Saturday the highlight is the time honored Stradbroke Handicap meeting conducted at Eagle Farm over 1,400m. The support card includes the Group 1 JJ Atkins Plate over the same distance as the Stradbroke and the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate over 2,200 metres. On Sunday we have the Swan Hill Cup, all the interstate venues plus all the overseas twilight action including Group 1 racing from Japan. On Monday there is all the Public Holiday action from all over Australia including Warwick Farm, Mornington, Ballina and Cairns……

The Group One Stradbroke Handicap was first run in 1890 and is the highlight of the Brisbane Winter Carnival. The Race is named after Lord Stradbroke who was a relative of Henry John Rous (1795-1877). Rous was appointed the Public Handicapper in 1855 in England and in this role he devised and introduced the “Weight-For-Age” (WFA) scale for all Thoroughbred racing that is still in use today. So every time you see WFA you will know who invented it. Past winners of the Stradbroke Handicap include Wiggle (1958), Persian Lyric (1961), Winfreux (1965), Cabochon (1968), Divide And Rule (1970), Rajah Sahib (1971), Triton (1972), Campaign King (1988), Rough Habit (1991/1992), All Our Mob (1994), Dane Ripper (1997), Show A Heart (2002), Private Steer (2003), Black Piranha (2009/2010), Srikandi (2015) and Santa Ana Lane (2018). Watch the mighty Rough Habit win the Stradbroke Hcp in 1992, the run up on the rails is truly unbelievable, look for the blue cap running last with 400 metres to go,  to watch – CLICK HERE
