It’s the World Cup Final and a man makes his way to his seat right next to the pitch. He sits down, noticing that the seat next to him is empty. The John F Feehan Stakes is run over 1,600m and was first run in 1948 when it was won by Phoibos. The John F Feehan Stakes has always been run over the mile and the only time it was not run at Moonee Valley was in 1995 when it was run at Caulfield. The first owner of the land where Moonee Valley is situated today was John F Feehan. That land was bought by a man called William Samuel Cox for whom the great WFA race the W.S. Cox Plate is now known. The race was renamed after Dato Tan Chin Nam (2005-2018) who is best known as a leading owner of horses such as So You Think and Saintly who both won Cox Plates with Bart Cummings as well as the dual Melbourne Cup triumphs with Think Big. It reverted back in 2019 to the John F Feehan Stakes. The winner of the race is exempt from ballot for the Cox Plate and the race has often been an excellent guide to the Cox Plate run six weeks later. The winners of the John F Feehan Stakes and even those beaten generally run well in the Cox Plate. The last horse to do the double was El Segundo in 2007. Slightly digressing for a moment but from 1992 when I commenced Bookmaking to now the El Segundo victory in the 2007 Cox Plate was my single worst ever race result and the 2007 Cox Plate day was my worst day ever as a Bookmaker. I lost $200k when El Segundo saluted in the Cox Plate and I lost on all ten out of ten races that Cox Plate Day to lose half a million in the day. The good news for me is that it was recouped during Cup Week.
