Who was Dato’ Tan Chin Nam? He was the principal owner for Australia’s most successful horse trainer, Bart Cummings. Tan is one of Malaysia’s richest men and had a hugely successful relationship with Cummings for more than thirty years until JB’s death in 2015. He owned at least a share in most of Cummings’ well-known horses, including Think Big, winner of back-to-back Melbourne Cups in 1974 and 1975, as well as the multiple Group One winner, Saintly. He was the owner of the 2008 Melbourne Cup winner Viewed, and is one of four thoroughbred owners to win the Melbourne Cup four Times. He also owned 2009 and 2010 Cox Plate winner So You Think, and the winner of the 2009 Crown Oaks, Faint Perfume. The Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes was formerly known as the the John F. Feehan Stakes (from 1948). The original race was named after John F. Feehan, who was the landowner of where the Moonee Valley Racecourse is located today. The race is run under Weight for Age conditions for horses aged three years old and upwards, over a distance of 1,600 metres . The race was renamed in 2005 for Malaysian entrepreneur and racehorse owner Dato’ Tan Chin Nam. One of my Favourite all-time horses owned by Dato’ was Saintly. Winning the 1996 Cox Plate was the race that had me rolling as a Bookmaker, if Filante, second by an eyelash and favourite, had won I don’t think I would be typing here now….
