Tony D (TD to his Mates) was walking down the street in Central Melbourne when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him for a couple of dollars for dinner. TD took out his wallet, extracted twenty dollars and asked, “If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?” “No, I had to stop drinking years ago,” the homeless man replied “Will you spend this on green fees at a golf course instead of food?” TD asked. “Are you NUTS!” replied the homeless man. “I haven’t played golf in 20 years!” “Well,” said TD I have a plan, “I’m not going to give you any money. Instead, I’m going to take you home for a hot shower and a terrific dinner cooked by my wife Denise.” She is a brilliant Cook. The homeless man was totally astounded. “Won’t your wife be furious with you for doing that? TD then replied, “That’s okay. It’s important for her to see what a man looks like after he has given up drinking and golf.”

The Group One Lightning Stakes was first run in 1955 and has been a Group One race since 1987. It is the only Group One race run in Australia over 1,000 metres and has always been run at Flemington except for one year in 2007 when it was run at Moonee Valley due to track renovations. It is the first leg of the Melbourne Autumn Spring Treble, one week later is the G1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield and then Australia’s best and most Famous Sprint race – the G1 Newmarket Handicap on the first Saturday in March at Flemington………Black Caviar has won the most Lightning Stakes – three in 2011, 2012 and 2013, hence the race is now known as the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes….
