An old doctor who had been seeing an 80-year-old woman for most of her life finally retired. The Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, was originally known as the Invitation Stakes and is run over a distance of 1,400 metres at Caulfield. Jovial Lad was the first horse to win the Race back in 1951, some other notable winners include Samson (1963), Manikato (1979), St. Jude (1991), Testa Rossa (1999 & 2000) and Exceed and Excel (2003) …..Sir Rupert Clarke was on the Victoria Amateur Turf Club (VATC) which is now the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) for 40 years, nearly half that time as the chairman, the race in now named in his honour….
