Who was Kevin Heffernan? Kevin was a longtime Victoria Amateur Turf Club (VATC) and Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) Committeeman who passed away in 2012. The fifth race at Sandown on Saturday is named in his honour and it is a Group 3 race over 1,300 metres. Kevin was a very good friend of mine and when I commenced Bookmaking in 1992 he helped me immensely and I have never forgot all the advice and help I received from Kevin. The race has had Group 3 status since 2013 and some notable winners of the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes include Lucky Hussler (2016), Famous Seamus (2015), Lankan Rupee (2013), Mid Summer Music (2012), Soul (2011), Lucky Secret (2009), Tesbury Jack (2006), Bomber Bill (2005), Century Kid (2002) and Sports (2000).
