Do you want to go for it?” “Sure,” said Mick. “I’ll have a go!” Eddie then asks the Million Dollar question: “Which of the following birds does NOT build its own nest? a) Sparrow, b) Thrush, c) Magpie or d) Cuckoo?” “I haven’t got a clue what the correct answer is Eddie, zero idea.” said Mick, ”So I suppose I will have to use my last lifeline and phone my good friend Paddy, he is from back home in Dublin but is in Melbourne for a holiday…”Mick called up his mate, and told him the circumstances and repeated the question to him. “Bloody hell, Mick!” cried Paddy. “Dat’s so simple it’s a cuckoo.” “Are you sure?” “I’m 100% sure.” Mick hung up the phone and told Eddie, “Lock in d) Eddie, I’ll go with cuckoo as my answer, my mate Paddy must know about a thing or two about the birds, I had no idea but he was adamant.” “Is that your final answer?” asked Eddie. “Dat it is.” There was a long, long pause and then Eddie screamed, “Cuckoo is the correct answer! Mick, you’ve won 1 million dollars!” Streamers, balloons all fall from the roof and Mick is jumping around all over the place in celebration. The next night, Mick invited Paddy to his local pub, Young and Jackson in Flinders street Melbourne to buy him some celebratory drinks. “Tell me, Paddy, I need to know? How in Heaven’s name did you know it was da Cuckoo that doesn’t build its own nest because I had no idea?” “Because he lives in a Bloody clock Mick!”

VMEETINGS

Super Saturday is one of the best days of Racing during the Autumn Carnival. There is the Group 1 Newmarket and the Group 1 Australian Cup at Flemington and then also we have the Group 1 Randwick Guineas and the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes at Randwick (Yes that is correct at Randwick, not Canterbury)……There are an extra three Group races at Flemington, five at Randwick, Friday has the Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket, Sunday we have the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes, Monday is the running of the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (first run in 1864) and finally on Saturday again there are three Group 1 races at Ellerslie (NZ) including the Auckland Cup worth $500k

A reminder that we are doing the Best of the Best (BOB) which is the Best of Top Fluc and Best Tote on all Australian Venues except Tasmania, unfortunately they don’t have the correct Official Price (OP) Odds…..Make sure you get in early with your BOB wager as depending on demand we will occasionally need to turn the BOB off for particular runners due to large liabilities so then the TF or the BT are your options……. Also remember to click on Modify if you require a wager that is more than the BOB Limit will accept…….

There are over 30 Feature Races available now, this time next week it should be over 40, once again we will match what price any of our Competitor’s are betting (except Bet365)……

The Group One Newmarket Handicap was first run in 1874 and was the brainchild of the the then VRC Committeeman and Chairman Fred Standish who has a Group 3 race named in his honour that is run on New Year’s Day. He wanted a six furlong (1,200 metres) race to add extra interest to the Melbourne Autumn Carnival. Apart from the Melbourne Cup it is the only other race at Flemington where 24 horses are permitted to race. It has always been run at Flemington except in 2007 where it was run at Caulfield due to the refurbishment works. The shortest priced winner was Black Caviar in 2011 at 2-11 (for the old-timers) or $1.18. Bart is the most successful trainer with eight victories & Damien Oliver the most for a jockey with three. If anyone ever wanted to see an omen how many people would have backed the winner Century in the 100th running of the race in 1973? Some of the Stars of the Turf to have won the time-honoured race are Wakeful (1901), Heroic (1926), Ajax (1938), Bernborough (1946), Century (1973), Placid Ark (1987), Special (1988), Schillaci (1992), Alinghi (2005), Takeover Target (2006), Miss Andretti (2007) and Black Caviar (2011)…
