Little Geoffrey wanted to go to the Zoo and pestered his parents for days and days. Finally, his mother Chloe talked his very reluctant father Allen into taking him to the Zoo. Little Geoffrey loved it so much but thought to himself that there was quite a large number of horses at this Zoo. He wondered where all the other animals were, but was still really happy to see the horses. “So how was it?” his mother asked when they returned to their Frankston East Home. “Great, really good” Little Geoffrey replied with enthusiasm. “Did you and your father have a good time?” asked his Mum.
“Yeah I loved it, but Daddy especially liked it,” exclaimed Little Geoffrey excitedly, especially when one of the animals came home at 30 to 1!”

The Group One Newmarket Handicap was first run in 1874 and was the brainchild of the the then VRC Committeeman and Chairman Fred Standish who has a Group 3 race named in his honour that is run on New Year’s Day. He wanted a six furlong (1,200 metres) race to add extra interest to the Autumn Carnival. Apart from the Melbourne Cup it is the only other race at Flemington where 24 horses are permitted to race. It has always been run at Flemington except in 2007 where it was run at Caulfield due to the refurbishment works. The shortest priced winner was Black Caviar in 2011 at 2-11 or $1.18. Bart is the most successful trainer with eight victories & Damien Oliver the most for a jockey with three. If anyone ever wanted to see an omen how many people would have backed the winner Century in the 100th running of the race in 1973? Some of the Stars of the Turf to have won the time-honoured race are Wakeful (1901), Heroic (1926), Ajax (1938), Bernborough (1946), Century (1973), Placid Ark (1987), Special (1988), Schillaci (1992), Alinghi (2005), Takeover Target (2006), Miss Andretti (2007) and Black Caviar (2011)……….
