VJOKE
A soldier running furiously came to a fork in the road and sees a nun standing there. Out of breath he asked, “Please Sister, may I hide under your skirts for a few minutes?” “I promise you Sister – I’ll explain WHY later.” Somewhat hesitant but also curious the nun agreed to the soldier’s strange request. Just a moment later two Military Police came running along the street and they stopped and asked the nun, “Excuse me Sister, but have you seen a soldier running by here?” The nun replied, “Why yes indeed, He went that way just a few moments ago” After the MP’s disappeared from sight along the road the soldier crawled out from under her skirts and said, “I can’t thank you enough Sister, but you see I don’t want to go to war anymore…” The nun replied, “I think I can fully understand your fear.” The soldier added, “I hope you don’t think me rude or impertinent sister but while was hiding under there I couldn’t help but notice that you have a great pair of legs!” The nun smiled at the soldier and replied, “If you had looked a little higher, you would have seen a pair of balls….I don’t want to go to war either.”

VFACTS
The actual first race meeting was conducted in Warrnambool in 1847 on the seafront in front of the Lady Bay Hotel where the horses still prepare today. In 1855 the Victorian Government set aside 100 acres as a Racing and Recreation Reserve and they started marking out the distance posts . Then three years later in 1858 the first race meeting took place and this included a three mile steeplechase with the winner collecting 40 sovereigns though all the facilities and finishing post were on the other side of the track back then. The Warrnambool May Carnival dates way back to 1872 with the first running of the Warrnambool Steeplechase, now known as the Grand Annual Steeplechase (it changed its name in 1895). There were 11 runners and the prize money was 100 pounds. The following year in 1873 the first running of the Warrnambool Cup took place. It started off at 3,200m (the Melbourne Cup distance) and has had nine distance changes to arrive at the current 2,350m. It is claimed that the tune of ‘Waltzing Matilda’ was first heard in Australia at the Warrnambool Racecourse in 1894, when the local brass band played a Scottish tune, which was later set to words by Banjo Paterson. A bookie on his way to the races – on horseback of course – came to grief in 1905 when his horse shied at a passing train and threw him off – he ended up with a broken leg, spending time in Warrnambool Hospital rather than taking bets on the track. One jockey called Sam Floyd always lit a cigar as he mounted his horse and was allegedly still smoking it as he dismounted at the finish. The Wangoom Handicap is run over 1,200m and was first run in 1888, it is the feature of the middle day of the Warrnambool Carnival. The race is named after the small town that is about 12 kms from Warrnambool (Population 378 at last count)…
VREFER
Many people think we are one of those Corporate outfits but that is not the case. With an emphasis on the codes of Horse Racing, Dogs and Trots we are the Old Fashioned type of Bookmakers (four generations going back to 1941). My Late Father Allen Cleary was a Bookmaker from 1956 – 2006, his Uncle Bob was a Bookmaker from 1941 – 1961. Today it is myself Rod and my Son Tim sharing the reins. We are NOT Corporates, we work On Course at the Melbourne Metro Meetings on the Rails, however the vast majority of our turnover is Online. Once again your referrals are always very much appreciated and one of the main sources of us sourcing new Clients so thanks very much in advance…….Feel free to contact us anytime if you have any questions about any Racing Matters….
